SUMMARY POSTED BY JEFFREY GALLANT (GEERG) ON TUESDAY SEPT 22 AT 01:30 AM.

The second leg of our 2009 Greenland shark tagging expedition was launched under a radiant sun after a six-week wait. Today's diving activities took place in Baie des Anglais off Baie-Comeau, Quebec. The main objective was to locate and tag one or more Greenland sharks with an acoustic receiver.

Unlike the month of July, the water today hovered just over the freezing point at only 1.5°C (34.7F). We dove at high tide and the horizontal visibility was exceptional (approximately 25 m / 80 ft) up to a depth of 10 m (33 ft). Beyond 10 m, the water contained a lot of sediment but there remained an unusual amount of light and colour. Even in reduced visibility, water conditions were more than adequate to observe sharks.

After a long linnear swim at a depth of 20 m (66 ft), we concluded that no sharks were present at the site. We did however observe several snow crabs as well as mysid shrimp exhibiting unusual behaviour. The shrimp hovered vertically in the shade of large rocks and were unaffected by the close proximity of divers.

Only one dive was conducted because of the late arrival of the dive team at the site. Activities will resume tomorrow in Baie-Saint-Pancrace.
