SUMMARY POSTED BY JEFFREY GALLANT (GEERG) ON SATURDAY JULY 18 AT 01:45 PM.

Today's operations were conducted in Baie-du-Garde-feu. Team members made three (3) dives in order to deploy the fourth acoustic receiver and then conduct a search for the Greenland shark. Atmospheric and sea conditions led to the early termination of diving activities and no sharks were seen.

The team from the Quebec Aquarium (Boissinot, Milord) and the Montreal Biodome (Savignac) encountered a very strong current at a depth of 15 metres while returning to the dock. The current was so strong that they could no longer move forward.

The GEERG team (Gallant, Harvey-Clark) explored the wreck of a fishing boat in near total darkness at a depth of 30 metres where large sharks were observed in the past. The dive was cut short because of depth and accumulated nitrogen from previous dives.

The second dive was canceled for safety reasons as sea conditions gradually worsened with the arrival of a storm system.

Part A of the expedition - receiver installation - has thus come to a successful conclusion. Part B, which mostly focuses on locating sharks, will start on Sunday and should continue till Wednesday.
