| Shark necropsy performed in front of record live audience |
The Musée du fjord, Oceans & Fisheries Canada, Mote Center for Shark Research, and GEERG performed a necropsy before a live audience of 1,347 people in La Baie. The necropsy was conducted by Dr. Chris Harvey-Clark (GEERG) , Dr. Jose Castro (Mote Center for Shark Research, Sarasota, Florida), Dr. Richard Saint-Louis (Maurice Lamontagne Institut), and Dr. Denis Chabot (Maurice Lamontagne Institut).
Jeffrey Gallant (GEERG) commented the operation in progress and answered questions on stage. This unique event was also broadcasted on television and on the Internet, and it resulted in 225 news reports during the following week. The Greenland shark specimen had been illegally caught by an ice-fisher in the Saguenay Fjord off the town of Ste-Rose-du-Nord in January.
The Diving Almanac & Yearbook lists the record-setting event as the "Largest audience for a shark necropsy." Record #190 (DAY 2008) |
