| Greenland shark captured in Saguenay Fjord |
A Greenland shark was captured off Ste-Rose-du-Nord on February 1. This is at the same location where the last - reported - capture in the Saguenay took place in January 2006*.
The shark measured 2.8 m (9'3''). It was pulled out of the water to take photos and then returned under the ice in order to respect DFO regulations. We do not know if the shark was still alive when it was returned to the water. A shark subjected to rapid ascent from deep water, hauled through a narrow hole in the ice, then exposed to air and freezing temperatures where it cannot get oxygen and where gravity crushes its body and vital organs has little chance of surviving.
Capturing a Greenland shark in the Saguenay Fjord is forbidden. In order to avoid fines and to increase a shark's chances of surviving the ordeal of capture, it should never be taken out of the water. If you hook a shark, cut the line!
*The 2006 shark was necropsied by GEERG.
