The Greenland Shark and Elasmobranch Education and Research Group is a not-for-profit organisation that requires financial assistance from corporations and private citizens to conduct field operations.

Over the next three years, GEERG researchers will conduct the most extensive shark distribution project ever undertaken in the St. Lawrence. In order to accomplish this task over such a large area, the GEERG team must secure funding to cover costs associated with travel, accomodations and transportation. No salaries are paid. All work conducted by GEERG scientists and assistants is done on a volunteer basis.

GEERG projects have no commercial applications and are thus not eligible for most types of official funding. We only conduct research projects that focus on science, discovery, education and conservation. The results of all of our work are shared freely with the science community and the public at large.

$25,000 worth of high-tech telemetry tags and receivers have already been secured for our 2010 research season. We are now in the process of acquiring a vessel that will carry the GEERG team to various dive sites as well as enable us to service the receivers that will be moored at various locations and accessible only by boat. Further funding is required to enable us to refit our work boat as well as acquiring an ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) and a side scan sonar. We believe that this expensive equipment is the key to revealing the secret life of the Greenland shark. Only when we know more about its numbers, its feeding behaviour, its mating habits and its overall distribution will we be in a position to determine how and where the Greenland shark is treatened by human activity. Only then will we be in a position to make sound scientific recommendations to ensure the sustainable coexistence of humans and sharks in the St. Lawrence.

Several corporations and institutions have become GEERG affiliates over the years. Their support and generous contributions have enabled us to conduct ground-breaking research on the Greenland shark. However, the scope of our research projects and the immense territory we cover now require the acquisition and use of more expensive equipment and services, and we need your help.

Please contribute to GEERG and help us study the unknown and elusive Greenland shark.
